The 11th edition of the European Association for Southeast Asian Studies conference will take place at the Palacký University in Olomouc, Czech Republic from 7 until 10 September 2021. Globalizing Palliative Care researchers Annemarie Samuels and Hanum Atikasari will talk about End-of-Life Care in Indonesia and will outline their research plans and reflect on how their questions speak to the analysis of silence, narrative and moral personhood at the end of life.

In understanding diversity from an intersectional approach, disability is one angle that is increasingly recognized and deserves our attention. In this seminar, we will discuss and challenge the rhetoric of naturalness, and ask how boundaries between normal and abnormal, abled and disabled are being defined and contested.

Dr. Saiba Varma (University of California, San Diego) will introduce her new book The Occupied Clinic: Militarism and Care in Kashmir (Duke University Press 2020) on Monday 7 June. This event is co-organized by the Leiden Institute of Area Studies, and the Asia Research Cluster and ERC Globalizing Palliative Care project at the Leiden University Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology.

Dr. Merav Shohet (Boston University) will discuss her new book: Silence and Sacrifice: Family Stories of Care and the Limits of Love in Vietnam (University of California Press, April 2021) during the next online Book Talk on Friday 21 May 2021. This engaging ethnographic monograph makes a powerful contribution to psychological, medical and linguistic anthropology and Vietnam studies. 

On the 25th of March Dr. Annemarie Samuels and Dr. Natashe Lemos Dekker will be the speakers of the next webinar of the three-monthly webinar in palliative and end-of-life care of the VUB-UGent End-of-Life Care Research Group and the Public Health at the End of Life Research Group of the Amsterdam UMC. The topic of their talk is Ethnographic approaches to studying end-of-life care: qualitative methods for tracing care trajectories.

On the 25th of February 2021 Annemarie Samuels will give an online lecture titled “Careful waiting at the end of life: Narrative navigation of dying in Aceh, Indonesia” at the Institute for Social Anthropology of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Click here for more information and registration.
